About
Living in London and born into an Irish and Trinidadian background, Fiddle player Matt Tighe is quickly making a name for himself in the world of folk and traditional music. Now twenty three years old, he has been described as a, “fiery virtuoso”, and has considerable performance experience, playing at many festivals and clubs within the UK and Ireland.
His much anticipated debut album was released in 2017 on the Greentrax record label, having been produced by the eminent Scottish multi-instrumentalist, Brian McNeill. It was the album of the week on Blues and Roots Radio and BBC Radio Nan Gàdheal as well as Fatea Magazine’s Instrumental Album of the Year 2017. It was described as, “A cracking debut album”, by Froots Magazine.
Matt has developed his own style of playing which has been greatly influenced by his two teachers: Brendan Mullkere and Dermot Crehan. He has won numerous awards such as the London Fiddle Convention Competition which lead to an invitation to play at the event and adjudicate the competition. Matt has also won numerous All Britain Championships, been a finalist in the Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections and been a semi finalist at the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award.
2020 will see the release of a duo album with Tad Sargent. Tighe and Sargent have played together extensively and have had two sell out shows at London’s Green Note and a headline slot at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections. They have also supported Kathryn Tickell & the Darkening on the main stage of Broadstairs Folk Week to name but a few of the exciting shows they have played.
Matt studied Classical Violin at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.
